Elizabeth Richmond had a corner of an office on the third floor; it was the section of the museum closest, as it were, to the surface, that section where correspondence with the large world outside was carried on freely, where least shelter was offered to cringing scholarly souls.

Once Jackson got into character and dialogue, though, I was intrigued, and shortly afterward, hooked. The first and third parts of the story were my favorites. Here, she explores many of the same themes–psychological dread, mental illness, and the like. She is afflicted by backaches, headaches and insomnia, and is disturbed when she receives threatening letters.
